You move through your day at lightning speed. Your thoughts race from one idea to the next, you rush from task to task, and your mind is troubled with an endless list of "to-dos" and "what-ifs". To top it off you have the additional weight of perfection; you want to do everything right, you don't want to make a mistake, you don't want to disappoint anyone. At the end of the day you are too exhausted to enjoy the people and things in life that matter most.
IMperfect Mind and Body is a space for you to slow down, breathe, and find freedom. Perfection can never be obtained, so I invite you to let go of that weight and bravely step into the beauty of what makes you unique; imperfections and all. When you decide to make this change a world of possibilities will be revealed. Try something new and don't worry about being good enough - because YOU ARE. Don't worry about making mistakes, because that is how you learn. And don't worry about being judged because I recognize and honor each wonderfully created individual and welcome you to boldly live "I M perfect".
I am Mary Mendez Rizzo and have been practicing yoga most of my life. For the past 15 years or so I've also studied karate and martial arts. Yoga, karate, and my faith have been integral to helping me maintain a healthy lifestyle.
The term "wellness" became popular as a way to describe the integration between mind, body, and spiritual elements of health. I became fascinated with Wellness principles, I interned at my University Wellness Center, studied Psychology and mental health, and earned a Master's degree in Counseling. Along the way I worked as a counselor helping people with a variety of life issues, and in addition to teaching yoga and martial arts have also taught college courses in communication and life skills. I truly love teaching, learning, and helping people.
The relationship between physical movement and mental / emotional health are well documented. Sadly, many people feel scared, intimidated, self-conscious, or even anxious to try something like yoga or martial arts. I've heard people say "I cant do that" and "it's not for me". I created IMperfect as a space to help turn off the noise of criticism and self-doubt and tap into your inner warrior. My goal is for every student to have wins, which is why I offer classes that vary in duration, intensity, and cost - I want classes to be accessible for everyone.
The most difficult part of any class is getting there. Just come to a class and I'll help you with the rest. Click the "join a class" link to see a schedule of offerings and give one a try.

I love yoga with Mamasaan, her enthusiasm is contagious. Each class I took was a little different but you have a good idea what each class will be like. She clearly brings all her backgrounds and experiences to her teaching.
I enjoy yoga but am a beginner and not very good at balancing. Mary is very patient, supportive and knowledgable as she teaches the different yoga positions. Her talent and passion generates a good flow to the class and she provides pose variations to keep all the students challenged. My day is always better after attending one of her classes.
"I like Cupcake Karate! It was really fun. I like the balloons and I did karate. Can I go again?"
What an amazing class! I fully enjoyed myself, and was so glad to stretch out muscles I couldn't usually get to. The stretches she provided me help a lot with martial arts wherein my balance and kicks have become a lot more sound.
